Florida Communications Unit – Radio response to Hurricane Ian

This video shows aftermath of Hurricane Ian and the setup of radio communications resources.

Major hurricanes generally wipe out communications wherever they make landfall. The high winds coupled with random tornados, destroy antennas, antenna towers, and above ground utility infrastructure.  Emergency responders, both paid and volunteer, need to set up communications before they can get to work helping the community.

Keep in mind, cellphones need towers and power. The towers themselves need infrastructure to handle and route calls. Cell phones are useless in a situation like this.

This video shows some of what goes on at ground zero to get radio communications going.
