The 1st Transistorized HiFi Product, The Fisher TR-1

fisher TR-1 transistor audio preamp

The Fisher TR-1 has the distinction of being the 1st transistorized HiFi product ever made. It was a mono phono/mic preamp that ran on a 9v battery. Battery life was stated as being the same as the shelf life of the battery itself as the current draw was so low.

It’s biggest sell was NO HUM. In a time when everything was running on vacuum tubes, it was hard to have a low signal as that from a microphone or magnetic phono cartridge be amplified without some hum getting in. This was very prominent with consumer grade equipment. This little box solved that problem.

It was priced at more than twice a comparable tube preamp of the time and beat the other transistorized entries to the HiFi world by just a few months. It was intended to be mounted in an existing equipment cabinet and came with an extended control shaft and bezel.
