Old Tech – WW2 B-17 Bomber Radios

These are just part of what would be an elaborate setup of the radio system used in WW2 aircraft. After the war, there was so much surplus equipment for sale that entire store chains were founded on just liquidating military gear. It was sold for pennies on the dollar, jeeps, radios, canteens, and even aircraft!

There were books published on how to mod ex-military electronics for civilian use, specially for ham radio use. In the Tech Resources section of the website, under “Radio Docs” you can find the “Surplus Radio Conversion Manual” which covered many of these mods. It’s now hard to find radios such as the one’s in the pictures that didn’t get hacked up by hams after the war.
